College World Series Rock Show!

Last night I went to the Slowdown to catch Noah's Ark Was a Spaceship and Ladyfinger (NE) play a free show. Unfortunately I got my dates mixed up and barely even got to the show on time. Also my camera, which is my main accessory when going to shows, was barely charged. No worries though, I still managed to get some photos and video before it died. I knew the College World Series was going on and that downtown was going to be crazy. I still thought things would be relatively normal even though I was entering CWS territory, I was wrong. It seemed most of the locals stayed away from the downtown chaos. Surrounded by tourists, I felt like I was watching my friends play in another city, which was really weird and really cool at the same time.
Both bands put on a good show and had the crowd rocking out; Which is awesome considering most of the people there had no idea who was even on stage. And the rest of us got to hear a bunch of new songs. The show ended with Noah's Ark joining Ladyfinger on stage and jamming out the end of a song together. It is always a treat to see three percussionists playing together on stage. My camera had already died by this point.
The Slowdown will be hosting free shows during the rest of the College World Series. Tonight Satchel Grande and Funk Trek are playing, but I don't recommend going. You can hear those bands or bands just like them at any 'family friendly' event or festival. Let the tourists have it. Hey, we never said we weren't biased. Instead you should go to the free show at Side Door Lounge (35th and Leavenworth) and see: Celeritas, Pharmacy Spirits, Shana Falana, Field Club and The Love Technicians (one of our favorite local bands).  Or spend $5 and go see, Retox and The Fucking Party at Brothers Lounge (38th and Farnam). Either show will be well worth your time.

The SUN shines on Cat Power

Chan Marshall, photo by Karl Lagerfeld
The always daring, and darling, Cat Power (a.k.a. Chan Marshall) just announced the release of a brand new (self-produced) album. This will be her first release in six years to contain all original material. The album is called SUN and comes out September 4th on Matador Records. Along with the announcement came a new single and video for the song "Ruin," which sounds amazing. A far cry from the sultry blues-heavy tone of her 2006 release, The Greatest, the tune sounds almost dance-y and playful, and somehow reinvigorated. The lyrics seem to just hop around, naming off sites and cities, while Chan's double-vocal styling booms with smoky melody. The track doesn't seem forced, but completely unhinged and effortless. You couldn't expect less from such a multifaceted songwriter, who constantly reinvents herself. Aside from rigorous touring and charming the pants off her fans, Chan has also taken up modelling... seriously. Just Google it. Anyhow, check out this stunning video and mark your calendar for the release, I have a feeling it's going to be excellent!
